Grundy Hall will undergo a multi-million-dollar project to renovate the whole building

WATERLOO, Iowa (KWWL) - Starting this June, Grundy Hall will be completely renovated from the ground up.
Being the home for health sciences at Hawkeye Community College, the $21 million project will completely reconfigure the building.
Upgrades will include: Bigger simulation labs, bigger dental clinic, spacious classrooms, new location for the main staircase, new EMS bay, a skylight, and more.
Known for their hands-on curriculum, President Todd Holcomb, said this will enhance the students' experience, and more.
"To create a talent retention model, to keep people here in the Cedar Valley, to meet all of our needs that we have, in healthcare, dentistry, science, you name it we have shortages and we have students that are ready to go into those careers," Holcomb said.
Dean Gene Leutzinger, Dean of the college for science and health science, told KWWL this will help create more possibilities for the community.
"With six patient rooms, with an apartment where occupational therapy students can go and work with someone in a home setting, where EMS students extract that patient from the apartment and transport them, that reality is a big piece that is so critical in the student's learning," Leutzinger said, "that's going to be the big difference maker in our simulation center and what they can accomplish."
The project will turn Grundy Hall into a 100% hands-on curriculum hub where many labs and classrooms will quadruple in size.
Leutzinger said this will also create a real hospital environment, where students in different professions must work together.
Classes will be relocated throughout the duration of the project. President Holcomb said he expects renovations to be done by the summer of 2023.
